Most dogs do not need their anal glands expressed on a routine schedule - they should do it naturally when they have a normal bowel movement. Here are some signs your dog's glands aren't emptying properly and may need some help from a professional: - scooting their rear across the floor, - excessive licking or chewing around the anus, - a strong fishy odor, - swelling or a small lump beside the anus, - discomfort when sitting or defecating, - soft stools or chronic diarrhea that prevent the glands from emptying naturally.
